Getting Around Cotonou: Zem, Gozem & Private Driver

Transport in Cotonou — zem and traffic

Getting around Cotonou is an adventure in itself. No metro, no structured bus system — but a transport ecosystem that works perfectly once you understand the rules. Here’s everything you need to know to move around with confidence.

The Zem — King of the Road in Cotonou

The zem (short for “zémidjan”) is the moto-taxi. It’s THE mode of transport in Cotonou. They’re everywhere, recognizable by their yellow vests, and often the fastest way to get around in a city where traffic can get heavy.

How it works:

  • You flag down a zem on the street (they honk to signal availability)
  • You state your destination
  • Negotiate the price before getting on — that’s the rule
  • The ride rarely takes more than 15-20 minutes within the city

Typical fares:

  • Short ride (5-10 min): 200 to 300 FCFA (~€0.30 to €0.50)
  • Medium ride (10-20 min): 300 to 500 FCFA (~€0.50 to €0.80)
  • Long ride (> 20 min): 500 to 1,000 FCFA (~€0.80 to €1.50)

Safety tips:

  • Ask for a helmet — it’s mandatory and most zems carry one for passengers
  • Hold on tight, especially around turns
  • Avoid holding your phone out during the ride
  • In the evening, use Gozem instead (see below)

Gozem — Cotonou’s Uber

Gozem is the most widely used ride-hailing app in Benin. It works exactly like Uber: enter your destination, see the fare, confirm, and a driver comes to pick you up.

Why Gozem is your best friend in Cotonou:

  • Upfront pricing — no negotiation, no surprises
  • GPS-tracked route — you follow the journey in real time
  • In-app payment — no need to carry cash
  • Moto or car — you choose based on your preference
  • Delivery service — handy for ordering from restaurants

Typical fares (moto):

  • Short ride: 500 FCFA (~€0.80)
  • Medium ride: 800 to 1,500 FCFA (~€1.20 to €2.30)
  • Long ride: 1,500 to 2,000 FCFA (~€2.30 to €3)

Gozem cars cost roughly 2-3x more but offer AC and comfort for longer trips.

Pro tip: Download and set up Gozem before you arrive in Cotonou. Create your account, register a payment method. You’ll be ready to go the moment you land.

Private Driver — Comfort and Flexibility

For excursions, sightseeing days, or simply if you prefer the comfort of a car with a driver, this is the ideal option.

How it works:

  • Your host arranges everything — they know trusted drivers
  • Air-conditioned vehicle, driver who knows the city
  • Perfect for day trips to Ouidah (Slave Route), Ganvié (lake village), or Porto-Novo (the capital)

Typical fares:

  • Half-day: 10,000 to 15,000 FCFA (~€15 to €23)
  • Full day: 15,000 to 25,000 FCFA (~€23 to €38)
  • Ouidah or Porto-Novo excursion: 20,000 to 30,000 FCFA (~€30 to €46) fuel included

It’s an affordable luxury that completely transforms the experience — especially for trips outside Cotonou.

From Cotonou Airport

Cadjehoun International Airport is located right in the city center — a rare advantage. Fidjrossè is about 20 minutes from the airport (outside peak hours).

Your options on arrival:

  1. Gozem — Order from the app as soon as you clear customs. Expect 3,000 to 5,000 FCFA (~€5 to €8) to Fidjrossè.

  2. Host-arranged transfer — Let your host know your arrival time. They can arrange a driver who’ll be waiting with a sign. Comfortable and stress-free, especially for late-night arrivals.

  3. Zem — Possible but not recommended with luggage. Save this for getting around once you’re settled in.

Pro tip: If you arrive at night, go with the host-arranged transfer. It’s safer and more comfortable than a zem or Gozem at 2am.

Your Base in Fidjrossè

The advantage of staying in Fidjrossè is the central location: close to the beach, restaurants, shops, and 20 minutes from the airport. Most of your daily trips will be by zem for a few hundred FCFA.

And for longer excursions, your host at Maison Ayaba can arrange a private driver with a single WhatsApp message. Everything you need to explore Benin with peace of mind.
